gsbStephen is a registered clinical counsellor with the BCACC and has a Master’s in Counselling Psychology. He has been practicing family therapy for 25 years, both in the non-profit sector and as a private practitioner. Stephen also supervises and administers a counselling clinic in Surrey providing clinical supervision and direction to students completing an internship for their Masters in Counselling Psychology. Stephen also does private practice work and employee assistance services as well as clinical supervision for other counsellors. He has extensive experience in family and individual counselling.

Stephen is fluent in Spanish and works with families from the Latin community. He has worked as a social worker for 14 years in Vancouver with children and families before he became a full time family counsellor. His clinical supervision and private practice experience means that he is always researching for effective ways to assist clients and students. His previous work has taught him the power of hope and confidence that people can understand and manage their issues.



I am an integrative therapist who specializes in individual, family, and relationship counselling.  My approach to therapy is client-centered and solutions-focused. I provide a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental environment where your thoughts, emotions, and experiences will be explored in depth. You are the expert in your own life, and I will work with you in a collaborative manner that takes your expertise and life circumstances into account.

Stephen practices a client-centered approach, and is an integrative therapist. He is trained in Family Systems Therapy as well as the Brief Therapy Modalities such as Narrative and Solution Focused approaches. He has trained as a trauma therapist in the “Clinical Interventions in Trauma” certificate program through the Justice Institute. He has completed a counselling certificate in Family Systems Theory through Pacific Coast Family Therapy Association. He has completed Gottman’s Couple work Level 1 training,Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples as well as completed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy training with Dr.David Burns to assist with anxiety and depression issues. He incorporates mindfulness in his clinical work and this allows him to work with clients in an integrated manner.

Stephen is experienced in understanding and practicing therapy with children and families from an attachment based perspective. He has worked considerably with children and caregivers who struggle with attachment issues.

Stephen’s considerable repertoire of training and experience assists him in helping clients to effectively manage and find solutions to their concerns.

Stephen is attentive to social justice issues and works with clients in a non-pathologising environment that respects them as individuals. He takes perspective from people’s life circumstances and presenting situations and he assists them within this context, taking into account their expertise in a collaborative manner. Stephen believes that ultimately, men, women and children wish to be respectful and caring in their relationships with each other. He brings a just and humanistic philosophy and approach to his counselling practice.
